Title:
Woman’s Work
Media:
Installation/Sculpture/ Mixed Media
The main
theme of this artwork is Woman’s Work created looking through the eyes of a
woman. The artwork aims to visually
explore the topic of woman’s work, and elevate the importance of domestic work,
carried out by millions of women worldwide.
The clothes horse is familiar to many women within the home; I use it as
a metaphor and a vehicle for art representing the many domestic chores
‘carried’ by women through society. Many
women complete many repetitive tasks and ‘invisible’ domestic chores’ daily,
but this is not highly regarded within society, this artwork aims to elevate
this work. The concept of this artwork aims to reflect a
large part of a woman’s day, which is taken up with domestic housework. Woman’s work and skill is explored within the
use of materials, methodology and processes reflecting the repetitive chores
and learned skills of a woman’s preordained gender role. Domestic
chores influence thought, positive and negative effects are represented within
a Photographic Diptych. Domestic tasks
and the Maleness of Language can have an imprisoning influence on women,
stifling their full potential, but skills learned from your mother and your
Mother’s Mother can create an outlet of usefulness and even creativity.
